Memorandum to J. Edgar Hover: January 31, 1949

On January 31, 1949, Strategic Air Command, San Antonio, sent a memo to the director of the FBI, that is, J. Edgar Hoover. The memo, entitled “Protection of Vital Installations,” includes sections like this:
Army intelligence has recently said that “the matter of ‘Unidentified Aircraft’ or ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena,’ otherwise known as ‘Flying Discs,’ ‘Flying Saucers,’ and ‘Balls of Fire,’ is considered top secret by intelligence officers of both the Army and the Air Forces.
And then it goes on to describe, in great detail what these “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” looked like.
