I’ll Be Home Tomorrow
Words by Stephen Foster
for SATB voices, a cappella, with optional introduction for strings
Voces Solis, conducted by Ryan Keeling
I’ll Be Home Tomorrow is my first of several pieces based on the songs of Stephen Foster. (The melody and the setting are mine, while the words are his.) It was written years ago for a project that never came to fruition, and truthfully, I would have nearly forgotten having written if Ryan Keeling hadn’t shown such interest in it. It happens too frequently that a composer thinks more highly of their music than a conductor or performer; this is a happy example of the opposite, where Ryan saw more in it than I did, and thanks largely to his efforts, it has become one of my more frequently performed pieces, particularly on or near Veterans Day.
The introduction was written years after the original work, at Ryan’s request. While the piece certainly works with the introduction, it is in no way necessary.
